Easter time in Mallorca!

Fantastic properties and festive activities await you.

Easter in Mallorca

You simply have to experience and see this at least once in your life. We do not believe that anywhere else in the world believers celebrate the Passion of Christ more impressively and passionately than in Spain.

During Semana Santa, Holy Week, hundreds of hooded figures with high, pointed hoods parade through the narrow streets. Many carry heavy wooden crosses, lavishly designed altars or figures of saints with them. By the way, these hooded men and women have no connection to the Ku Klux Klan - even if one or the other might be suspicious. They also have nothing to do with the dark times of the Inquisition. No, the masking only serves to “remain anonymous”, because doing penance should remain private.

From Easter onwards, many tourists will be on our beautiful island - and traditionally you can also expect members of the Spanish royal family on Mallorca. In recent years, Old Queen Doña Sofia and her sister Irene from Greece have always visited. Doña Sofia is also the bearer of the name of the regatta “Trofeo Princesa Sofia”, which was once named after her and takes place on the public holidays from March 31st will take place in the bay off Palma until April 8th, 2024. This regatta is the largest sailing event in Spain with around 1000 boats and around 1500 participants from 63 countries taking part. Since the entire royal family is known to be extremely enthusiastic about sailing, they are hoping for a bit of glitz and glamor again this year with the presence of one or more members of the Familia Real.

If you are looking for another gift for your loved ones this Easter in addition to cute Easter bunnies, colorful Easter eggs and/or one of our great properties ;-) ... one of the top hits in the list just published by the British Office for National Statistics is the vinyl record. Believe it or not, vinyl is actually experiencing something of a renaissance, is a real bestseller and is listed among the 700 goods and consumer goods used to measure inflation. These products are selected based on what the average consumer spends their money on. Superstars like Taylor Swift have already jumped on the trend. Her album “1989 Taylor's Version” was the best-selling LP in the UK in 2023 with 100,000 copies.

So Easter is just around the corner. Spring is already here - life is so much fun on our beautiful island and we are looking forward to a wonderful summer! Whenever you have the time and desire to view one (or more) of our beautiful properties, we would be delighted if you contacted us. Because you know, there's even an old stock market saying that you should never put all your eggs in the same basket... not even at Easter.

The investment strategy of many of our customers is therefore investments outside of stocks and bonds. Many people invest a large part of their assets in so-called “alternative investments” - the two best-known of these “alternative investments” are gold and real estate.

We at Palazzino Living - House of Homes - cannot serve you with pure gold... - but we can with wonderful “concrete gold”!

Take a look at what nice things we have for you!

So now we hope you enjoy browsing through our newsletter and of course

Feliz Pascua!

The "Semana Santa" in Mallorca

We have compiled the most important dates, key dates and terms for you:

As the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Easter is the most important and oldest Christian festival and is celebrated in a very special way here in Mallorca. According to New Testament tradition, the resurrection of Christ took place at the time of the Jewish Passover, which depends on the spring full moon.

Semana Santa: traditionally begins in Palma on Palm Sunday.

Requiem de Mozart: The traditional classical music concert in Palma's La Seu Cathedral is this year on 25 March at 8.30pm. Sometimes the concert will be attended by the Queen Doña Sofia.

Information at catedraldemallorca.org

The Easter processions:

Masked figures with high pointed hoods, chains and heavy statues of saints parade through the streets of Mallorca during Holy Week. You should know this: There are over 50 contrafaries (brotherhoods) on our island. 30 of them in Palma. Membership is a great honour and is usually passed on from father to son. In the meantime, of course, also from mother to daughters (sisterhoods).

Processió de la Sang:

On Maundy Thursday, 30 brotherhoods parade through the streets in medieval costumes, figures of saints and chains for the "Processió de la sang" (the blood procession). In Santanyi, the procession starts at the church "Sant Andreu" at 9.30pm.

In Palma, the procession of the Holy Blood of Christ starts at 7pm in the church of l'Anunciació. During the ritual, which lasts several hours, the most revered figure of Christ on the island, the "Cristo de la Sang", is carried to the cathedral.

Divendres Sant - Good Friday:

Passion plays are held in some towns on the island on this day. The two most famous are probably the "Devallements", the Descent from the Cross procession from Calvary to the parish church in Pollença or also in Palma. The procession of the Holy Entombment starts at 7pm at Plaça Sant Francesc in the centre of Palma.

The celebration of the Passion of Christ in Palma's cathedral is the climax of Holy Week and is the day of greatest mourning for the death of Jesus. At 6pm, the death of Jesus is celebrated with the reading of the passion, the descent from the cross and the procession of the Holy Sepulchre.

In Pollença, the figure of Christ is taken down from the church at the top of Calvary and carried down the 365 steps by the brotherhoods. There is no music and no talking among the spectators.

In Santanyi, the procession begins at 9.30pm at the church of "Sant Andreu".

Easter Saturday:

Mallorcans are not actually familiar with the typical North German Easter bonfire, as the Easter bonfire probably has Germanic or pagan origins and is also known as a Passover bonfire, bonfire of joy or Judas bonfire.

The original idea of an Easter bonfire was a social gathering and symbolises the Holy Spirit.

Easter Sunday:

In many places, holy masses are held in the parish churches. In Santanyi, it is held at 10:00am at the "Porta Murada"..

Easter Monday:

The Mallorcans like to organise a family picnic in the countryside or on the beach and the week after Easter is when most pilgrimages take place on Mallorca and also on the mainland.

Angel Sunday:

This is the Sunday after Easter Sunday. On this day, a large festival is held at Bellver Castle with a children's programme and folklore performances. Around 20,000 guests are expected every year.

Empanadas:

These are especially popular on Easter Saturday in Mallorca. Empanadas are semicircular pastries filled with savoury meat, fish, vegetables, sultanas, pine nuts, etc.

*Robiols are the same shortcrust pastry pockets, only sweet. They are filled with jam or cream cheese.
